This is a wonderful part of Sagemon in gourd shape. A Sagemon is the perfection of a handicraft art which is one of famous folkart in Yanagawa, Fukuoka Kyushu. People began to make a Sagemon since mid 1600’s (Edo period) for a family with a daughter to wish that their daughter grow up beautifully and gently like this item. It is a painstaking works and takes a couple of weeks to complete each item since it is made one by one so elaborately by hands still now. Naturally there is no same designs and besides, they only make a limited quanity per year. It is mainly made of silk. It is circa made in late 1980's or before but luckily has been kept in good condition. As a Temari ball is popular for a Sagemon parts, a gourd shape like this item is rare. Please add this wonderful piece to your collection of Japanese folkart.
